Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet has been the subject of trade and cut rumors all offseason, but he showed at OTAs that he can do more than meets the eye.

Up until last year, Kmet was one of the team's top pass catchers and play a big role in the offense. Colston Loveland's emergence in the second half of the 2025 campaign made life tough on Kmet to try to make his mark in head coach Ben Johnson's offense.

At Bears OTAs, Kmet showed he can do more than catch passes and block as the team's social media team shared a video of him throwing the ball downfield to Rome Odunze. According to Bears reporters, Kmet threw the ball about 50 yards before Odunze caught it.

Maybe Cole Kmet is about to play more of a role in the offense

Last season was a rough one for Kmet as he put up his lowest numbers since his rookie season in 2020. He finished 2025 with 30 receptions for 347 yards and two touchdowns, but did make one of the most important catches of the season with a game-tying touchdown reception to force overtime for the Bears against the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional Round.

Kmet's role in the Bears' offense in 2026 has been up in the air due to the changes that were made. Loveland is the clear-cut number one guy who has Caleb Williams' full trust, but after the team selected Sam Roush in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, that could cut into Kmet's snaps on offense.

For Kmet to show that he can throw the ball pretty well down the field, he's showing off the versatility he has. Loveland is a great pass catcher and Roush is a great blocker, but Kmet can do a bit of both.

The Bears would be wise to make sure that Kmet stays involved in the offense as much as possible as they will need him in 2026.
