ESPN cautiously ranks Bears' coaching staff (but Ben Johnson will change that)

That ranking won't last long.

One thing has been apparent during the Chicago Bears' training camp, and that's the coaching staff is not messing around.

Between head coach Ben Johnson, offensive coordinator Declan Doyle, and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, the three have established a new culture of eliminating the negative aspects of the previous coaching staff. They are bringing a new order of discipline and success the franchise has needed after missing the playoffs four straight seasons.

Even with that being shown at camp. they aren't getting the high ranking as a staff quite yet. ESPN's Ben Solak ranked the Bears' coaching staff 22nd against the rest of the NFL. The good news is that Chicago moved up from 25th last year, but Solak wants to see them during the regular season before moving them higher.

"Johnson has deservedly been the apple of the league's eye for a few coaching searches now. Yes, plenty of great offensive minds have tried and failed at the CEO position. But Johnson learned under one of the best in Dan Campbell, and he has taken this process from coordinator to head coach slowly and carefully. Those are positive, albeit early signs.

Also a good sign: Getting Allen at defensive coordinator. Last year's unit was a league-average group, but the Saints were a top-10 defense by points per drive surrendered and success rate with Allen at the helm from 2021-2023. It might take some time to onboard the current personnel into the defensive structure, as I'm not sure Allen has the man coverage guys he needs just yet. But eventually, I'm confident Allen can build a consistent top-10 defense for Chicago.

Perhaps I'm too far out on a limb here -- the four other first-year coaches are within the bottom-five teams on this list. But if I have to plant a flag, this Bears staff feels like the right group for it."

How good is this Bears' coaching staff in 2025?

Johnson is the rockstar of the group. He coached the Detroit Lions' offense to being a top five unit in each of the last three years as their offensive coordinator.

Doyle is in an interesting spot as the offensive coordinator, as it will be Johnson running the show, and Doyle is more there to help out. It'll be the first time Doyle has been an offensive coordinator, and who better to learn from than Johnson, who has been the best at it since 2022.

Allen's resume is impressive as a defensive coordinator, and he has been a head coach twice in his career. He helped repair the New Orleans Saints' defense over the last five years and made them legitimate.

On paper, this is a dream coaching staff that can help Chicago find the grit and aggressiveness it has been missing, which made the franchise great in the 80s. It may take some time to learn their systems, as has been apparent at training camp over the last two weeks, but this team has the right leadership to help out.
