Outside of their three-game winning streak against the Los Angeles Rams, Carolina Panthers, and Jacksonville Jaguars, the Chicago Bears haven't seen the improved offense this season they were hoping for when they made a switch from Justin Fields as their starting quarterback to Caleb Williams.
Of course, the transition to Williams included the additions of running back D'Andre Swift along with wide receivers Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze. On paper, the Bears' offense was supposed to be among the reasons why the team was going to be a playoff contender during the 2024 season.
Instead, the Bears' offense seems to be the reason why the 2024 season is trending toward being one of the more disappointing seasons in recent memory.
Further example of that disappointment was emphasized by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The 2024 season is proving to be a fact-finding mission for the Bears' organizations. The struggles of the offense last season were not just on Luke Getsy, though Getsy's firing by the Las Vegas Raiders confirms that he wasn't the solution as a play-caller. The struggles of the Bears' offense wasn't entirely the fault of Justin Fields either, Williams' recent struggles have been proof of that.
Despite the added playmakers, the Bears' 2024 offense is just as bad as their 2023 offense. Of course, a large portion of the blame needs to be laid at the feet of Shane Waldron. Waldron's scheme is not utilizing the player's strengths, Keenan Allen being the biggest example of that.
However, there is a common denominator that suggests Ryan Poles deserves a large portion of the blame. The Bears' offensive line in 2023 was a mess, and it hasn't been any better this season.
Until the Bears' have a competent offensive line, it doesn't matter who the offensive coordinators or quarterbacks are. The offense will continue to be broken until Poles diverts some resources to a unit he has largely ignored during his tenure as the team's general manager.
