ESPN insider has brutally honest assessment of Matt Eberflus' future

With a loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, many Chicago Bears fans will be hoping to wake up to the news on Black Friday that Matt Eberflus has been fired as the team's head coach.

Eberflus' tenure has been defined with a losing streak of at least three games in each of his first three years as the team's head coach and loss to the Lions on Thursday would push the team's current losing streak to six games.

In talking about the latest installment of a disappointing season for the Bears, ESPN's Adam Schefter had a brutally honest assessment of what the future may hold for Eberflus.

To some, this may be the best outcome for the Bears given the situation that Ryan Poles foolishly placed the team in last January. There was no reason for Poles to bring back Eberflus for a third season. Eberflus should have been fired as the Bears' head coach last January, creating the path for Caleb Williams to be on the same timeline as his head coach. The writing was on the wall last January that Eberflus was not the answer for the Bears as a head coach. In fact, Williams' historic streak of not throwing an interception despite losing each of those five games is more proof that Eberflus' coaching is the problem.

The only thing that is saving the Bears' coaching search in the offseason is the fact that within the past two weeks, Williams is proving why he was selected with the first-overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. Coaching candidates will be drawn to the Bears because they want to be connected with the success that Williams has.

For a Bears' organization with an ownership structure that may turn candidates such as Ben Johnson away, Poles will need to lean on Williams being the draw. Otherwise, Poles may find himself out of a job not long after Eberflus does.
