With Caleb Williams out for the second time this season, Tyson Bagent started at quarterback for the Chicago Bears as they picked up a 23-12 win over the New York Jets in Week 4.
Technically, we can't say this was Bagent's first start since 2023, since Case Keenum got the first snap of the game on the Bears' offense, so he gets credit for the win. Still, Bagent's first action in three years was an interesting one for Chicago.
So, comparing it to Keenum's start in the Week 3 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, how did Bagent look in the game? We'll look at Bagent's performance and how he played in the game.
Evaluating Tyson Bagent's performance in Bears' win over the Jets
This is a classic case of how the box score can be 100% deceiving about how a player actually played. Bagent completed 25 of 34 passes for 268 yards and one interception. He also ran for one yard on four carries.
Overall, based on the stats, that is not bad at all. He showed strong accuracy and wasn't afraid to rip it downfield for Chicago.
What the box score won't show fans is that Bagent often didn't make the right decision. In fact, he is extremely lucky to have had only one interception because four others were called back for Jets penalties. Heck, there was a drive where Bagent had two interceptions called back because New York committed a penalty. Talk about a wild sequence.
That said, they liked a lot about Bagent on the field before Keenum. Bagent's ability to use his legs to create plays is why he won the backup job in the first place. Having him on the field is like having Williams out there as well.
Bagent got a lot of help in this game from the rushing attack of Kyle Monangai, D'Andre Swift, and Roschon Johnson, who totaled over 200 yards. Monangai did most of the damage with 146 yards and two touchdowns.
This is one of those games where Bears fans aren't exactly left thrilled with how Bagent played, but not discouraged either. Keenum played much better against the Eagles than Bagent did against the Jets. There is something to be said for a conversation about who should start in Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers.
Bagent didn't exactly play his way back into a start, but he's got some things to clean up. This looks like an average day for him.
