It took way too long for the Chicago Bears to fire former head coach Matt Eberflus. But, just like the fact that it didn't take long after the season for him to get hired by the Dallas Cowboys, it also didn't take long for those very Cowboys to learn something about Eberflus on NFL's opening night.
The Eagles' opening possession saw Jalen Hurts and company drive 70 yards on 10 plays. It ended with the Super Bowl MVP scampering through a wet noodle Cowboys defense for a touchdown run.
On that opening drive, the Eagles averaged a healthy 5.3 yards per rush while Hurts also went 3-for-3 passing for 34 yards. It was a strong six-minute drive for the Eagles offense against a defense without Micah Parsons. That's about what we thought would have happened, especially considering Eberflus was at the helm of the Cowboys defense.
Matt Eberflus is in over his head as Cowboys defensive coordinator
Eberflus might have been a decent coordinator with the Indianapolis Colts, but let's also remember that he didn't have to put up with the high-flying offenses of the world like these Philadelphia Eagles or the Washington Commanders.
Now, he is being entrusted with a defense that just lost arguably a top-3 defensive player in the league and is watching their top two cornerbacks try and come back from injury-laden seasons. Eberflus might talk a stout, disciplined game but like the headline states, it didn't take long for the Cowboys to see the real Eberflus.
Two out of his three seasons in Chicago, Eberflus' Bears defense finished as a bottom-10 unit. In 2023, they were the fourth-worst in football.
Now, the Cowboys are coming off a year that saw them finish bottom-five and they think Eberflus is the right man to get them back where fans want to see them? And in a season where they decide to ship off Parsons to Green Bay?
Speaking of Parsons to Green Bay, thanks a lot Jerry. But that's a story for another day.
For now, we'll just try and enjoy watching Eberflus' Cowboys defense fall apart throughout the incoming season.
