On a night where emotions ran wild and felt like the ultimate roller coaster, newly-signed Chicago Bears kicker Jake Moody was called upon to be cool, calm and collected under immense pressure.
Moody had been signed just days ago and brought up from the Bears' practice squad as starting kicker Cairo Santos was inactive due to a thigh injury. In the waning seconds of the Monday Night Football clash with the Washington Commanders, Moody had all the pressure squarely on his shoulders.
And, he delivered. The Bears won off the leg of Moody as time expired, avenging last year's loss to the Commanders and winning their third game in a row. Afterwards, Moody met with the Bears media and was asked about the moment. At a time when he could have been wildly excited and celebratory, Moody was simply humble.
"Cairo's an amazing kicker. For the team's sake, you want the best guy in there. I'm just glad I was able to come through for the team," he said, courtesy of the team's live YouTube stream.
Jake Moody didn't take an ounce of credit for his game-winning field goal in the Bears' Monday Night Football win
Moody would go on to talk more about Santos while deflecting the big moment.
"I got no doubt Cairo would've made all those kicks. Hopefully he heals up soon," Moody said about his Bears teammate.
Now, the third-year pro was asked more directly about how it felt to be the one who made that game winner, especially after how things ended with the San Francisco 49ers. Moody did end up saying it felt "amazing," but he also went right back to crediting his Bears teammates such as Tory Taylor and Scott Daly, the two responsible for the all-important snap and hold.
After Moody went just 1-for-3 on field goals back with the 49ers in Week 1, San Francisco let him go. He had been a third-round pick just a couple of years ago, yet his confidence had seemed to take a huge hit.
Last year, Moody made just 70.6 percent of his field goal attempts which was down nearly 14 percent from his rookie campaign. Many 49ers fans had had enough of the inconsistency, and eventually, the team parted ways.
Now in Chicago and filling in for Santos, Moody may have just resurrected his career in a magnificent manner. Still, he didn't want to take the credit and remained very softspoken while complimenting his Bears teammates over and over again.
