Just two games in and Caleb Williams is not providing much confidence for Bears

He's just not getting better.

The hope for Chicago Bears fans on Sunday was that quarterback Caleb Williams was going to show some progression and improve upon his mixed 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings last week. That certainly didn't happen after the Bears lost 52-21 to the Detroit Lions.

Williams had a solid first half, during which he threw two touchdowns to his 2024 first-round pick partner, Rome Odunze. He did have a rough interception in the same half where it looked like he was trying to throw it away, but didn't get it far enough past the sidelines.

The second half was a disaster for Williams and the offense as the Bears only had seven yards for the unit in three drives during the third quarter. They were able to get a rushing score on the first drive of the fourth quarter, but the Lions got so far ahead of the Bears that Williams was benched in favor of Tyson Bagent to avoid injury.

Williams finished the game completing 19 of 30 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns and one interception. He also added 27 yards on five carries on the ground in the loss.

Williams did not get better in the Lions' game and that's concerning

That hope Chicago Bears fans had for Williams improving from game one to game two did not happen. In fact, it seemed to be a bit more of a regression.

A significant reason for that was the offensive line struggling with protecting Williams, as it seemed like he was under pressure all game long. The Lions got four quarterback hits and sacks on Williams.

Another problem for Williams is that he got back into his old bad habits of trying to do too much and making bad decisions on his throws. He seems to try to revert to playing a bit of hero ball. On the broadcast, they put it perfectly where Williams needs to be more of a point guard than a shooting guard.

Williams still has a lot to prove to Bears fans and now has a massive hill to climb up with the team starting 0-2 on the season.
