Patience is wearing thin among Chicago Bears fans, as they want to know when Caleb Williams will return, but with the team at 3-1, there may be a strong reason to ease him back onto the field.
Williams is set to miss his third straight game in Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers, as he deals with a hamstring injury he suffered in the Bears' Week 2 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Tyson Bagent has been named as the starter for the Packers game. Since then, he hasn't practiced once, and it doesn't look like he'll practice this week either.
So the question here is when Williams will be back on the field for the Bears. After the latest update, "soon" is finally a word we can use appropriately.
What is the latest with Caleb Williams' return for the Bears?
The Athletic's Bears reporter Dan Wiederer updated fans on Williams's progress. Wiederer made it sound like Williams is getting closer to playing despite not practicing yet.
"Bears QB Caleb Williams has yet to practice since straining his right hamstring in Week 2.
BUT
Williams is progressing notably with his on-field recovery steps. Per those in the know, he has looked spry and comfortable taking drops, planting, slinging it around."
Wiederer added a bit more context on an estimated timeline for Williams to return. Because of how the schedule is set up, one date might make more sense than the others.
"The Bears do have a scheduling quirk that could factor into Williams’ clearance. After a Week 6 Sunday game in Atlanta, Bears face quick Thursday night turnaround before home v NE. (Then an extra-long turnaround before 11/1 MNF game in Seattle.)"

In the two games Williams has played this season, he has completed 65.5% of his passes for 407 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception. He added another 107 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
When should Caleb Williams come back and play for the Bears in 2026?
Williams's progress is great news for Bears fans. It sounds like he is close to returning to practice, most likely next week.
The concern isn't his ability to throw the football or plant his leg; he can throw without major issues. But there's more to what makes Williams great than that.
What Bears fans need to hear is how Williams is running with the football. This is a guy who lost weight in the offseason, and training camp buzz was that he was faster. Fans saw that in Week 1 against the Panthers: how quickly he moved with the football.
Yes, throwing the football is the most important because it's his main job. Williams is special, though, when he can scramble out of the pocket and either run it or make an incredible throw. If he is a statue in the pocket with a hamstring that is not 100%, there is no point in playing him because he won't be as effective as he could be.
Much of the Bears' decision will depend on what happens in the Packers game in Week 5. If the Bears win, there's no reason to play Caleb in Week 6 and jet him ready for the Patriots game on a short week. A loss to Green Bay, though, could push Chicago to decide that Williams needs to play in a now-important Falcons game.

No matter what happens, the Bears are in a good spot, and Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum have held down the quarterback spot so far. Williams returning to the Patriots feels like the most logical choice right now, so the Bears should really play it smart.
