Mark Schlereth's ridiculous take on Ben Johnson left Bears fans utterly confused

This shouldn’t be too surprising at this point, but someone has an issue with the Chicago Bears' head coach, Ben Johnson.

What’s new?

Mark Schlereth, former NFL offensive lineman and color commentator, said on “The OG Football Show” that he would smack Johnson for writing checks that the players have cash, which, apparently, is putting extra pressure on Johnson’s team.

Trying to figure out what Mark Schlereth is saying about Bears HC Ben Johnson

Regarding the “checks” RegardingSchlereth referenced, none were specifically mentioned. This latest rant seems like someone doubling down on the Bears getting blown out by the Green Bay Packers, 31-7, at Lambeau Field in Week 6.

Could Schlereth be referencing what happened after the Bears’ wild-card win over the Packers? When Johnson gave Packers head coach Matt LaFleur a quick handshake and cursed out Green Bay’s organization in the postgame locker room? Potentially.

Schlereth is a former player, so he has first-hand experience of what it’s like being coached up in the league, but when has it ever been a bad thing for a coach to embrace a rivalry and bring fire to an organization that has been on the wrong side of the win-loss column against the Packers?

The Bears’ locker room has never pushed back on how Johnson carries himself and the emotions he displays, especially in the rivalry with the Packers. If anything, Johnson's team has embraced the hard-nosed identity that the Bears’ head coach has established since he joined the organization in 2025.

Johnson has high expectations for a team that clinched the NFC North and won a playoff game last season. He’s frequently said those accolades are in the past, and 2026 presents a blank canvas, which the Bears are currently navigating.

He wants the best for his team. That shouldn't be shamed.

Schlereth also said this past summer that Caleb Williams “is not a good quarterback.” Even though Williams proved he’s not just a good quarterback, he’s one of the NFL's most dynamic playmakers.

No matter how Johnson runs his team or expresses himself, he will always face some scrutiny. Schlereth's rant comes off as someone who clearly has an issue with Johnson and this Bears team.

Outside noise will remain just outside noise. Johnson won't change how he runs his football team, and his players will back him up as they have all season.
