Whenever someone says that Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is not a good quarterback, that is going to catch all the wrong attention.
FOX NFL analyst Mark Schlereth is facing the heat after he recently said that while Williams is a dynamic athlete, he is not a good quarterback at this stage of his career. ESPN Radio in Chicago had Schlereth on to try to explain what he meant by his comments, as he appeared to stick to his script.
"I think when you break him down, here is a guy that has unbelievable potential, and he makes unreal plays. He is as dynamic as anybody. But I think when you start to really break him down from the standpoint of play in and play out, some of the plays that he leaves on the field, the plays that he gets sloppy with his footwork, some of the inaccuracies on some throws, those are the things that I said he's not even good yet. He is not a good quarterback yet from all of that standpoint."

A lot of what Schlereth talked about, as well, is Williams not staying on schedule with the plays being called by Bears head coach Ben Johnson. Schlereth admitted in that ESPN Radio interview that he would rather have boring than explosive since that is a great way to win championships.
To be fair with what Schlereth is saying, his analysis is not 100% wrong. Bears quarterback coach J.T. Barrett has talked about Williams moving away from the hero ball and doing the small things right. Williams is inaccurate with the football, as he posted a 58% completion percentage last year.
At the same time, Schlereth's use of the term "not a good quarterback" is completely wrong in this context. The whole NFL media world is in agreement that Williams is one of the best quarterbacks in the league with his play.
Williams' dynamic play at quarterback with his arm talent is incredible to watch, as most NFL signal-callers can't do what he does. He can use his legs to give receivers chances to get open, but more importantly, Williams protects the football with just 13 interceptions in 34 regular season games.
There's no doubt that Williams is a work in progress and has some areas to improve, but he made major strides in 2025 that show he is anything but "not a good quarterback." A bad quarterback isn't leading seven comeback and game-winning drives, or winning a division title, or coming back from 18 points down to beat their division rivals in the playoffs.

If Schlereth wants to continue to use the term "not a good quarterback" in that way, that's his choice. It's not the right thing to call Williams as he is, without a doubt, one of the top-10 quarterbacks in the NFL right now.
