In what has become an annual tradition, former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy finds himself reunited with Bears' beat reporters on the opening night of the Super Bowl Week festivities.
Nagy and the Chiefs are looking to make history this week as they try to win the Super Bowl for the third consecutive season. In terms of the breakup with the Bears, there is no question that Nagy won.
For the first time since Nagy was their head coach, the Bears have an offensive-minded head coach in Ben Johnson. While many have been quick to compare Nagy and Johnson, it's important to note that when the Bears hired Nagy, he wasn't the Chiefs' play-caller; he was running Andy Reid's offense. Not only was Johnson the play-caller for the Lions but he was the mastermind behind the offense.
Nevertheless, Nagy was asked on Monday night what advice he has for Johnson.
For all that went wrong at the end of Nagy's tenure, the fact remains that he was the only head coach since Lovie Smith to take the Bears to the playoffs twice. Nagy had his faults, but he was far from the worst coach the Bears have had. Matt Eberflus may check that box.
Matt Nagy is a fan of Caleb Williams
The downfall of Nagy's tenure with the Bears was the team never got the quarterback position right. Mitch Trubisky failed to take a leap in his development following his first season with Nagy in 2018 and the former head coach did not appear to be interested in catering an offense around Justin Fields. Some have speculated how Nagy's tenure with the Bears would have gone if Caleb Williams was his quarterback. While that question may never be answered, Nagy is a fan of Williams.
It will be interesting to see if Nagy finds landing as a head coach in the NFL again. Nagy did have interest from the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints this offseason but it never appeared that he was a legitimate candidate for either opening. It's possible that the Chiefs are eyeing Nagy to be the eventual successor to Reid.
