The Chicago Bears season isn't over, and they are once again the talk of the town over every other NFL team. The Bears made history by letting go of coach Matt Eberflus during the season. Let's not worry about the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have only had three head coaches. Following the Bears' failure to hire Dan Quinn when he was a finalist before they hired Eberflus, he is showing signs of why he is a true NFL head coach.
Call it timing or whatever you want, but he has put the Washington Commanders on the map. Despite what many believe, the next Bears' coach doesn't have to be an offensive mind. I used to believe that was the only route to go with a young quarterback as well, but these quarterbacks either have the "it" factor, or they don't.
Caleb Williams looks at the part that we can all agree upon. Why doesn't an offensive mind matter? We've seen what Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos did with Sean Payton, right? We thought maybe Wilson was washed up. That clearly wasn't the case. Maybe Payton had lost his marbles or didn't have enough talent around the quarterback. That wasn't the case either.
Scheme and fit over anything else seems to be the most desired route in the NFL. We should have seen it when the Carolina Panthers lockdown cornerback Josh Norman, was shipped to Washington. Some players are scheme-dependent, and some aren't. Now, if Thomas Brown shows that he deserves to be the next head coach, the Bears should roll with him. However, it seems they have a coach that fits the criteria that they are looking for.
Mike Vrabel is that guy. You could argue with Bill Belichick, and I wouldn't disagree with you. The only issue with Coach B is his age, and he is also used to being the GM. Despite being a subpar GM, Coach B was very good at making lemonade with dirt. The Tennesse Titans have shown us the same thing. Both coaches failed because they didn't have quarterbacks anymore.
You need a quarterback to win consistently in the NFL. It sucks, I know. Joe Flacco's argument about his ability might have been true this entire time. Vrabel, in 2018, was a blowout by the Colts twice and the Texans once. That happens to rookie head coaches. Did he lean on Derrick Henry? Yes, but who wouldn't? Marcus Mariota was the starting quarterback. As much as we wanted Mitch Trubisky to become the man, Titan fans were hoping the same for Mariota.
Mariota isn't good. Trubisky also isn't good. You need a quarterback to thrive in the NFL. Notice how things changed when the Titans went from a 9-7 to Mariota to a playoff team with Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill was over the hill at that point, but he was still good enough to give his team a chance. That is all the Chicago Bears need is a chance. Also, Vrabel can find offensive play-callers.
He went from Matt LaFleur to Authur Smith to Todd Downing. I know you don't know who Downing is, but he had that Titans team's best regular-season record among all of those other coaches. He is the Jets passing game coordinator. Dan Quinn brought in Kliff Kingsbury. These are things good coaches do. Mike Vrabel should be at the tip top of the coaching search. Lastly, he warned us about Nate Davis ahead of time. Thats tough.
