NFC North QB named potential suitor for Bears (and would steal a roster spot)

It would be an upgrade.

One of the least discussed position battles taking place at the Chicago Bears' training camp is the one happening behind Caleb Williams.

Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum are facing off against each other to win the backup quarterback job. While both guys make solid options for that spot, there might be another signal caller who would fit the job better.

Bleacher Report writer Kristopher Knox shared his list of quarterbacks that a select number of teams should trade right away. Detroit Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker was named on the list, with one of his potential suitors being the Bears because of his connection with new Bears head coach Ben Johnson.

"The Bears, who employ former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as head coach, could view Hooker as a multi-year backup to Caleb Williams. With a high athletic ceiling, Hooker might mirror Williams' play style than Tyson Bagent or Case Keenum in Johnson's system."

Would Hooker be seen as an upgrade to the quarterback room in Chicago?

Hooker was a third-round pick of the Lions in the 2023 NFL Draft. He didn't appear in a game in his rookie season, but did complete six of nine passes for 62 yards in three games.

Bagent and Keenum are solid options at backup, but Hooker would be able to separate himself from the others. The obvious reason is Hooker's relationship with Johnson, who served as his backup for two seasons. That now looks more important than ever with the recent struggles of Williams and the Bears' offense.

Chicago's offense will improve, but having someone who knows the complexities of Johnson's offense would help the team move forward and grow within it better. Hooker can show Williams what Johnson is looking for in his quarterbacks with quick decisions and athletic abilities being used.

A move with Hooker would leave the Bears with a tough decision regarding Bagent and Keenum. It would most likely be Keenum who would get the short end of the stick since he is older. Bagent has enough playing experience that he can hold his own as the second or third-string quarterback.

The question in whether the Bears should make the move is an interesting one. Their quarterback situation is good, but having someone like Hooker who is experienced in Johnson's offense would make it better.
