No-brainer running back trade package is too good for Bears to refuse

Why wouldn't the Bears make a deal like this?

As the Chicago Bears race toward Week 1, they've watched several other teams make some moves as of late. At this point, it would make a lot of sense for the Bears to make one of their own.

Over in Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers have a decision to make on running back Rachaad White after this season. The former first-round pick is in the last year of his contract and has seen Bucky Irving supplant him as the starter. Meanwhile, the Bears could use some added depth in the back field.

If the price was right, the Bears should absolutely go after White.

Rachaad White to the Bears makes a lot of sense

From the Bears' perspective, they are getting a player who is similar to D'Andre Swift in that he is very good in space. White excels in the passing game and would be a strong third down back to have in the fold. If he gets out into the open field, White still has the speed to take it to the house.

Chicago already has a couple of options for goal line type of backs in either Roschon Johnson or Kyle Monangai, who both run harder and possess the more physical style. Now, the Bears could also opt to surprisingly cut someone like Johnson. In that case, maybe they'd look elsewhere for a similar style back.

With White, they have another option in case Swift doesn't cut it.

Between the two of them, Ben Johnson would have some speed to work with. Neither Swift or White are great between the tackles, but with the amount of weapons the Bears possess in the passing game now, both White and Swift could find opportunities to get the ball in space without a whole lot of attention.

This deal, in and of itself, is a low-risk type of trade. A sixth-round pick is not a ton to give up for a former first-round talent who recently had a career year in 2023. That campaign, White finished with 990 rushing yards and 549 through the air with a total of nine touchdowns.

The versatility makes him attractive, but more than anything, it's his speed. That's something Johnson has had an eye for.
