The Chicago Bears fan base could use some good news out of training camp after all the negative press surrounding the quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense.
Thursday provided that with Williams showing in one play why he was the number one overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. ESPN Bears beat reporter Courtney Cronin detailed the pass that has fans feeling optimistic again.
"Quarterback Caleb Williams and receiver Olamide Zaccheaus connected for the longest play of camp. On third-and-4, Williams avoided pressure and launched a 40-plus yard pass to the veteran wideout."
Williams showing what he can do, but now it's about consistency
It's not enough to show one play how great he can be, but he needs to keep doing it. That wasn't the only great play Williams made as he connected with Rome Odunze on a sideline catch—another perfect example of Williams' potential brilliance.
Last year, not enough of that was shown as Williams threw for over 3,500 yards and 20 touchdowns to six interceptions. It was the 10 fumbles and 68 sacks that had fans and media members wondering if Williams would be okay.
So far in training camp, it has been a struggle with the offense in the first week with pre-snap issues and Williams' inaccuracy. It appears that things are heading in the right direction for Williams and the offense.
Rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III returned to practice and seems to be getting into a rhythm after a couple of days of struggle. Odunze and DJ Moore have been playing well and starting to build that chemistry with Williams, backup from last year.
Fans want to see what this offense will look like in preseason with everyone together for the first. They all know what Williams can do, but can he fit what head coach Ben Johnson is trying to do?
