During the offseason, there were plenty of moves (or lack of moves) by the Chicago Bears that were questioned by the fan base.
One of those moves was the decision from Bears general manager Ryan Poles to not bring back Pro Bowl cornerback Nahshon Wright after leading the NFL in turnovers with 10. Wright elected to sign with the New York Jets on a one-year deal.
Well, one play at Jets OTAs suggested the Bears might have been right not to bring Wright back. The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt shared that Wright nearly picked off his quarterback, Geno Smith, at practice, but dropped the interception.
Not bringing back Nahshon Wright is starting to look like the right decision
Wright had a great season for the Bears in terms of the turnovers he forced on defense, but struggled mightily with his consistency in coverage. He allowed 13.6 yards per completion and six touchdowns on the season.
Some Bears fans didn't love the idea of Wright leaving the team after having a good relationship with defensive backs coach Al Harris. Another part of the reason was that the Jets only signed him to a contract worth up to $5.5 million, and some questioned why the Bears didn't do that when he came cheap for a Pro Bowl selection.
Chicago instead decided to select Texas cornerback Malik Muhammad in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Muhammad is expected to compete with Tyrique Stevenson for the starting CB2 job.
While it would have been nice to have Wright back with the Bears, they also need to bring in guys they can develop and who can play consistently. The defense is looking to rely less on turnovers and more on shutting down the yards allowed.

It remains to be seen whether this was the right decision, but if Wright can't get those easy interceptions, the Bears might have been right to move on.
