RELATED: Amon-Ra St. Brown isn't hiding his frustration over Bears' start to free agency
The Bears need some edge rushing help. They've done a bit to address it through free agency so far, but even after signing Dayo Odeyingbo, there's been plenty of speculation that edge is going to be where the Bears hit the draft hard next month. Neither the team nor the fans were subtle about how much they wanted a Khalil Mack reunion, but that obviously happen.
BUT! That doesn't mean a 2018 reunion is totally out of the picture. It may not be the one that Bears fans were totally stoked for, but it would 1. scratch at least some of the nostalgia itch and 2. make at least a tiny bit of sense. Reader, the Bears now have the opportunity to bring back Leonard Floyd. I know, it is a dumb idea. That's what free agency's all about, baby.
The Bears reuniting with Leonard Floyd wouldn't be the worst idea of NFL free agency
Floyd, who's quietly put together a pretty respectable career since leaving Chicago, is officially a free agent, as Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday afternoon. Since signing with signing with the Rams, and then spending seasons in Buffalo and San Francisco, Floyd has averaged almost 10 sacks a season – he's also, notably enough, played in at least 16 games in every season since 2017. At 32, it's not unreasonable to think he has a couple seasons at that level of production left in him.
That ... seems like something the Bears would be interested in? It doesn't quite tug at the heartstrings like a Mack reunion would have, but you can never have too much edge rushing depth and Floyd is the definition of consistency. It's not like he'd be a huge burden on their cap, either – he's been a one-year deal type of guy for a few years now, so if it doesn't work out, oh well. We're going to get some sort of 2018 reunion one way or the other, and it beats kicking the tires on, like, Allen Robinson. It would, unfortunately, create a kinda awkward jersey number situation with Austin Booker. But at the very least, it's an interesting idea to chew on. Or at least fun idea? Or maybe just an idea.
