Perfect solution to running back depth issues just fell into Bears' lap

Make the call now, Ryan.

After the final 53-man roster appeared for the Chicago Bears, it became very clear that they have a problem at running back.

The team decided to carry just three running backs despite the laundry list of injuries that have occurred for the team. Roschon Johnson and rookie seventh-round pick Kyle Monangai are both out with injuries. D'Andre Swift is the only healthy running back on the roster.

On Monday, Swift and Brittian Brown were the only backs on the field, but Brown ended up still getting cut. The Bears currently have Deion Hankins and Travis Homer on IR.

This presents a major problem for Chicago, which clearly lacks depth at running back and is one Swift injury away from a catastrophic situation unfolding before them. The good news is that Bears general manager Ryan Poles stated in his press conference on Tuesday that it would be a late night going over the waiver wire to see who's available. One player might catch his attention as someone to pursue.

Khalil Herbert just became available for Bears to bring back

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported late Tuesday that, as part of the Indianapolis Colts roster cuts, running back Khalil Herbert was one of those players. Herbert had just signed with the Colts during the offseason.

When one opportunity closes, another one opens for Herbert, who would be perfect for the Bears to bring back home. He had great success in his three and a half seasons in Chicago, where he rushed for 1,791 yards and nine touchdowns for an average of 4.8 yards a carry in 48 games.

Last year, the Bears traded Herbert to the Cincinnati Bengals for a seventh-round pick. Not sure if there are still hard feelings about that deal, but Poles would be crazy not to at least call Herbert to see if he would want to return.

That would instantly solve all the running back depth issues with a guy Chicago is familiar with already, as he already played the part as Swift's backup. He didn't get the carries he needed to, but the Bears would get a 27-year-old reliable back who can still play at a high level.

Herbert can help the team right now and get the Bears through this rough patch of injuries, and give the other backs more time to heal. Plus, wouldn't it be great to see Herbert in a Bears uniform again?
