The Chicago Bears made a smart move to trade the Seattle Seahawks for Darrell Taylor. There may not be many big-name pass rushers left, but the team had to upgrade this position with some real depth before the start of the season. What are some important stats that fans should know about Darrell Taylor?
3. Darrell Taylor regressed last season with the Seattle Seahawks
Darrell Taylor is entering his fourth NFL season and is averaging just over seven sacks per season. That sounds pretty solid, but there have been ups and downs. He had 6.5 sacks to start his career and that shot to 9.5 sacks in what looked like a breakout second season. However, Taylor regressed in his third year with 5.5 sacks, a career-low.
This shows in the advanced stats as well. Taylor had a 6.2% win rate as a rusher per PFF last season. That is down from 8.9 in his second year and 8.6% in year two. So even when he had a bit less production he was still winning at about the same clip. This past year he really fell off.
His pass rush productivity rating was 7.1 as a rookie, and 6.9 in year two, but it dropped to just six last year. Still, when you look at the Bears situation, this is still an upgrade.
Yannick Ngakoue had a 4.8% win rate last year and a 4.8 pass-rush productivity score. That is why the team is choosing Taylor over Ngakoue. More than that, Dominique Robinson had a 1.4% win rate and 2.1 PRP. Taylor will enter Chicago as the fourth rusher, so the upgrade over Robinson, the current fourth rusher, is massive.
