The dust has settled on the first wave of NFL Free Agency and it's clear that the Chicago Bears are going to be selecting Caleb Williams with the first overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.

No, the Bears are not moving forward with Justin Fields. No, the Washington Commanders' hiring of Kliff Kingsbury was not a precursor to the Commanders doing whatever it took to trade up and select Williams. No, Williams is not refusing to play with the Bears.

With the moves that the Bears have made this offseason, the team is ready to turn the franchise over to Williams. It's much different from the time the Bears did the same for Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fields as Ryan Poles has created an offense loaded with playmakers in DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Cole Kmet, and D'Andre Swift.

Outside of Williams landing with a team already in the position to make the playoffs, ones that already have an established quarterback in place, there is no greater landing spot for the USC quarterback than the Bears.

That is the reason why it's baffling to hear former NFL quarterbacks express their disappointment that Williams did not pull an Eli Manning and refuse to play for the Bears.

The Caleb Williams refusing to play for the Chicago Bears takes continue to be hilariously wrong.

It's a situation where many are using the Bears' past to make assumptions about their future. As Ryan Poles reminded everyone last week, it's his job to not repeat the mistakes of the past.

Outside of Washington being his hometown, there is no other reason why Williams should refuse to play for the Bears in favor of the commanders. Williams is not even in the building at Halas Hall yet and Poles has already confirmed he will do everything to make sure the quarterback succeeds. That already is more than any Bears' general manager has been willing to do in the past.
