10 biggest questions facing Chicago Bears in 2023 season
5. Will Roschon Johnson end up leading the Chicago Bears backfield?
We know who the Chicago Bears leading rusher will be when week one rolls around; Khalil Herbert is locked into the starting job, as evidenced by his usage in the regular season. However, there are questions about the long-term stability with Herbert.
First, he struggles in pass-protection, and the team hardly used him in that area. He also was not a power runner and lacked the instincts to run inside the tackles consistently. Herbert is at his best when he can use his speed to get to the edges on outside zone runs, but that could mean that he is just a part-time player in this offense.,
This could open the door wide for someone like Roschon Johnson to step in and get serious work. Johnson started as the fifth running back in preseason and worked up the third team. He can pass protect, and at his size, his best trait is using his size to push the pile forward. As the season goes, and the weather changes and the Chicago Bears need more power, it could be Johnson leading the charge. The easy bet is Khalil Herbert to lead the team in rushing, but Johnson could be that person as well.
