It may have taken longer than Chicago Bears fans were hoping after the first-team offense struggled during the first quarter of the game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday, but rookie quarterback Caleb Williams proved he was a magician during the team's final drive of the first half.
One of the biggest reasons why Williams has had NFL scouts raving over the course of the past two seasons is because of his ability to channel his inner Patrick Mahomes with the plays he made at the quarterback position with the USC Trojans.
While Bears fans were used to former quarterback Justin Fields making magic on the ground, Williams's throw to rookie wide receiver Rome Odunze reminded everyone why the team is in much better hands at the quarterback position.
It's hard to put into words how special that throw was from Williams. What is most important for Williams when he makes these plays out of the pocket is that he continues to keep his head looking down the field. Williams wants to turn the magic into a successful play in the passing game that gets his team down the field and that is exactly what happened on Saturday.
But don't get it confused, Williams can also make plays with his feet when he moves from outside of the pocket. Williams' first touchdown in a Bears' uniform came on a scramble that will only strengthen the comparisons to Mahomes.
It was an successful ending to Williams first game at Soldier Field. Despite the struggles to begin the game, Williams finished the game with momentum as the Bears head toward their final game of the preseason against the Kansas City Chiefs next Thursday.
