Caleb Williams had the perfect response when asked about Patrick Mahomes
Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams had the NFL world buzzing this weekend after a pair of magical plays he had to conclude his playing time in the team's preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
With a pair of plays where Williams went off-script--one for a 49-yard pass to Rome Odunze and the other for a touchdown--the Bears' rookie reminded everyone of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
While Williams has not shied away from these comparisons in the past, confirming Mahomes is one of the quarterbacks he watches closely, the Bears' quarterback had the perfect response when asked about the comparison after the game on Saturday.
"We're excited. To your question, it's respect. It's cool and all, but I'm Caleb Williams. Patrick Mahomes is Patrick Mahomes. Tyreek Hill is Tyreek Hill. Much love to them and things like that. I met them, talked to them both, things like that, but we're here to win games for the Chicago Bears."
That is the perfect response from Williams.
Caleb Williams sees the Patrick Mahomes' comparisons but sets the record straight.
The Bears do not need Williams to be Mahomes. The Bears need Williams to be the Caleb Williams that we saw with the USC Trojans over the course of the past two seasons. If the Bears get that version of Williams, there is no question that they will be set at the quarterback position.
Beyond that, how Williams closed his answer is yet another reminder why he is indeed the right leader at the quarterback position for the Bears. For all the character assassinations there were of Williams in the months leading up to the draft, he has quickly dispelled them with how he has handled the first few months in Chicago. Williams has embraced not only being the starting quarterback of the Bears but a leader within the locker room.
