Caleb Williams is letting the Bears know he wants Micah Parsons
By Ryan Heckman
Monday was a relatively calm day for the Chicago Bears. As the team prepared to cut down to its 53-man roster by Tuesday's deadline, the Bears made a handful of decisions; none of which were too surprising.
But, another NFC team made headlines as a superstar finally received his long-awaited contract extension. The Dallas Cowboys agreed to an extension with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. It was a four-year contract worth $136 million in total.
This, of course, could have many ripple effects around the league. Does Ja'Marr Chase get his deal? Can the Cowboys now afford to extend Dak Prescott? One of the biggest questions, though, is whether or not the Cowboys can afford to now extend Prescott and linebacker Micah Parsons.
Bears fans did their thing on social media and started the Parsons-to-Chicago train, as the fan base loves to do whenever there's even a fraction of a chance that a notable player is on the block.
interestingly enough, though, Bears starting quarterback Caleb Williams found one of the posts insinuating that general manager Ryan Poles picks up the phone and attempts to trade for Parsons.
And, Williams reposted it on X (formerly Twitter).
Williams is obviously playing into the heads and hearts of Bears fans everywhere, but consider the fact that the rookie passer doesn't often post on social media. In fact, he hasn't posted more than once every couple of days, on average, in quite some time.
Is Williams doing his due diligence to send a hint to his general manager?
After seeing how he's bonded with head coach Matt Eberflus along with Poles, thanks to HBO's Hard Knocks, it wouldn't be surprising to see Williams make such a bold request.
Do the Bears have a chance to trade for Micah Parsons?
After the Lamb contract, the Cowboys have around $28.5 million in cap space. So, their first priority is probably going to be Dak's new deal, which will supposedly average $60 million annually.
It all depends on how Dallas were to structure the deals, but right now, per Over the Cap, the Cowboys have $64 million in cap space for 2025 before the Lamb contract is taken into consideration. Lamb's deal pays him an average of $34 million, annually, but that's not necessarily the cap number next year. Again, you have to factor in how the deal is structured with bonuses, etc.
Even if Lamb's cap hit is half of that -- let's call it $17 million thanks to some creative structuring by Jerry Jones and company -- that would leave $47 million to sign Dak, other free agents and the 2025 draft class.
Factor in Dak's contract structuring and how it would impact the 2025 cap and beyond ... do you see where I'm going with this?
Look, the odds Dallas trades Parsons seem next to nothing. It probably isn't happening. Jerry Jones knows he's got to make both the Dak and Parsons contracts happen, or Dallas will flat-out riot.
But, on the off-chance that the Cowboys cannot get both of those contracts figured out and Parsons magically becomes available, why not make the call if you're Poles?
After all, your quarterback has spoken.
Update: Later on Monday night, Williams deleted the reposted message.
