Now that the Chicago Bears final preseason game is in the books, what should fans expect to see in the initial 53-man roster?
Quarterback - (2): Caleb Williams, Tyson Bagent
Brett Rypien is expected to circle back to the practice squad, where he can be called up as the emergency quarterback.
Running back (5): DeAndre Swift, Khalil Herbert, Roschon Johnson, Travis Homer, Khari Blasingame
It is hard to make the case for Velus Jones to make the roster when he was behind Ian Wheeler in the preseason finale, and Wheeler will not be making the roster.
Wide Receiver (5): D.J. Moore, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, Tyler Scott, Nsimba Webster
DeAndre Carter has been injured and then caused a turnover during one of his few punt return chances this preseason. That, combined with Webster outperforming as a receiver, and Webster showing in multiple phases of special teams gets him on the roster.
Tight End (3): Cole Kmet, Gerald Everett, Marcedes Lewis
This has essentially been locked down for a few weeks now.
Offensive Line (9): Braxton Jones, Teven Jenkins, Coleman Shelton, Nate Davis, Darnell Wright, Matt Pryor, Ryan Bates, Kiran Amegadjie, Jake Curhan
The five starters, plus Pryor, Bates, and Amegadjie are locked in. The ninth lineman is Jake Curhan, who likely had a lead over Larry Borom, but may have solidified it due to the Borom injury in the last preseason game.
Defensive Line (9): Montez Sweat, Gervon Dexter, Andrew Billings, DeMarcus Walker, Austin Booker, Zacch Pickens, Byron Cowart, Dominique Robinson, Darrell Taylor
Daniel Hardy has outperformed Dominique Robinson, but the coaching staff never gave Hardy a chance against better competition, and he remained behind Robinson this week. It is clear who the coaches prefer. Even with Taylor in the mix, it is smart for the Bears to keep the depth around.
Linebacker (6): TJ Edwards, Tremaine Edmunds, Jack Sanborn, Amen Ogbongbemiga, Noah Sewell, Micah Baskerville
Sewell returning to the lineup this week locked down his status on the roster. Baskerville has done enough on defense and special teams to win a spot.
Cornerback (7): Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon. Tyrique Stevenson, Terell Smith, Josh Blackwell, Reddy Steward, Jaylon Jones
Steward started in the slot over Greg Stroman and had two interceptions, including a pick-six. Jaylon Jones did not play due to injury, so you could argue Jones or Stroman for the last spot, but Steward should make it.
Safety (4): Kevin Byard, Jaquan Brisker, Jonathan Owens, Elijah Hicks
Tavarius Moore started next to Jonathan Owens, but Elijah Hicks did not even play at all. He is a core special teamer, so his role should be locked. This may come down to Moore or a tenth lineman, and we lean offensive line depth over anything.
