3 difficult roster decisions Bears must make before Week 1
By Ryan Heckman
This 2023 version of the Chicago Bears is going to be a different beast.
Any non-Bears fan just laughed reading that, and that's fine. But, it's true.
General manager Ryan Poles is doing just about everything he possibly can to ensure the Bears are better than they were a year ago, and by a mile. Adding talent around Justin Fields was a huge priority, and Poles stepped up to the plate.
The defense also got much better this past offseason.
Now, going into the latter half of the summer and training camp, the Bears have a few more questions to answer within this roster, before Week 1 approaches.
Do the Bears add an edge rusher?
The first decision this team needs to make, and much sooner than Week 1, is whether or not they are serious about adding an edge rusher. Poles has admitted he's looking at the position, still, even long after the draft was over.
Right now, the Bears have Trevis Gipson, DeMarcus Walker and Dominique Robinson as their top three, with veteran Rasheem Green rounding out the rotation. None of those guys seem the type to offer the defense a double-digit sack type of season, and Chicago still has a few options in free agency.
Of course, the best available is Yannick Ngakoue, and he's someone fans have been clamoring for. Should the Bears decide to sign someone like Ngakoue, this defense would take an enormous step overall. They are set in the secondary and at linebacker, and their defensive interior should be better after adding a pair of rookies along with Andrew Billings.
But, adding an edge rusher is something the absolutely should do. Are they going to do it?
