When we broke down the potential finalists for the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator job, the top candidate that stood out was former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. The Bears clearly agreed as they plan to hire Waldron as their offensive coordinator this week.

Chicago Bears hire Shane Waldron for offensive coordinator job

There are a few reasons why Waldron makes plenty of sense to the Bears. The first is that he is actually a part of the Sean McVay tree. When the Bears hired Luke Getsy, they thought they were getting a piece of the tree because they hired someone who was working with Matt LeFleur. However, Luke Getys was actually on the Green Bay Packers before LeFleur was, and he was much more tied to Mike McCarthy and Joe Moorhead when it came to his play-calling style.

So, it should be no surprise that the two sides clashed styles. Now, the Bears actually have a Sean McVay coach. He was with McVay as early as 2016, as McVay hired him to be the offensive quality control coach for Washington.

When McVay left Washington, he moved to the Los Angeles Rams, and he brought Waldron with him. Waldron was there from 2017-2021.

More than just being with McVay, he has called plays in the NFL on his own with the Seattle Seahawks. This is where he turned Geno Smith's career around.

Most of the other candidates had play-calling experience, but none of them had that level of success. Greg Olson had a few decent years with Derek Carr, Klint Kubiak struggled with the Minnesota Vikings, and Thomas Brown was a dud with the Carolina Panthers. Waldron had success.

Waldron was the most experienced candidate, he was the most successful, and he was one that would truly bring in the style of offense that they thought they were getting last time. There are plenty of reasons to think Shane Waldron is the right offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears.
