This recent declaration by Justin Fields should have Chicago Bears fans excited
The quarterback position has not been very friendly to the Chicago Bears organization. When you think about this franchise, running backs, linebackers and dominant defensive play is what comes to mind. No one thinks about elite quarterback play. The hope is that Justin Fields can turn that around. Unfortunately, not many believe that can happen. Some think he's a bust already. Fans should be excited about what Justin Fields thinks though.
As of now, the Chicago Bears have never had a quarterback throw for over 4,000 yards. They are only one of two teams to never achieve this feat. The other is the Philadelphia Eagles. The closest Bears fans have seen to that total was when Erik Kramer threw for 3,838 yards in 1995. Jay Cutler probably would have eclipsed that mark in 2014 had he played in all 16 games.
Justin Fields declares he will break the Chicago Bears passing record
In an interview with Bryant McFadden on the All Things Covered podcast, Justin Fields was asked if he would break this franchise record. Here was Fields' response.
No one seems to believe that Justin Fields can break that record this year. With a 17-game season, it means Fields would only need to throw for 236 yards per game. That doesn't seem too difficult, Eight quarterbacks threw for over 4.000 yards last season and Patrick Mahomes threw for over 5.000. That is just over 28% of the league.
Last season, Justin Fields only threw for 2,242 yards. That is only 149 yards per game on average. We would need to see the Chicago Bears quarterback take a very big jump this season. He definitely has the tools to make it happen. Ryan Poles went out and gave Justin Fields the wide receivers he needs to become a star in this league. We will need to see how the offensive line develops, but it appears that Fields has enough weapons to improve his passing numbers. I'm not certain he has a real shot at 4,000 passing yards though.
Personally, I'd be happy with 4,000 all-purpose yards. If Justin Fields can make that happen, then the Chicago Bears are going to be pushing for a playoff spot this season. I want to see a competent offense and I don't care if that comes through the air or on the ground. This team just needs to show efficiency and the ability to adapt each week. I truly believe Justin Fields can be that guy. Do you?
