We have touched on the Alan Williams situation enough for now. Until we find out more facts, there is no point to continue speculating. The big question from a football standpoint was how the Chicago Bears, specifically Matt Eberflus, were going to handle the defensive coordinator position. Last week, Matt Eberflus called the defensive plays. We saw a shift in blitz % early on but the outcome from a pass-rush standpoint was essentially the same -- not good.

Heading into this week, all we knew was that Alan Williams was not with the team due to personal reasons. Now, he's officially resigned as the Chicago Bears defensive coordinator. What everyone wanted to know was who the Bears were going to have fill that role each week.

Matt Eberflus will continue to be the Chicago Bears defensive coordinator

Well, we now have the answer -- at least for the short term. When addressing the media today, Matt Eberflus had this to say:

"This is the best thing for us right now. I think that's where it is. It's the best thing for our football team and for our organization. That's where we see it, and that's where it is."

When it came to the defense, we all knew that Alan Williams was essentially running Matt Eberflus' system. A system he inherited from others before him such as Lovie Smith and Rod Marinelli. It's a version of the Cover-2 and well, Williams wasn't running it well anyway. The strange thing about all of this though is that when Matt Eberflus took the head coaching job, he turned over the play-calling duties to Alan Williams in order to take on a CEO-type of running things. He didn't want to focus on calling plays for one side of the ball but instead wanted to actually manage the full team. I guess that's changed.

I'll be honest. This approach is one of the biggest reasons why I thought Matt Nagy failed as a head coach. I think he took on too much and didn't trust his offensive coaching staff to handle things. He had a bit of an ego and was a bit of a control freak. I'd be surprised if he follows that same path should he ever see another opportunity as a head coach in the NFL.

Now, he did leave it open as he said it was what's best for the team right now. It doesn't mean that they don't look to make changes down the road. However, I am curious to see how it affects Eberflus' ability to focus on the entirety of the game and not focus on only the defense. This week is probably going to be rough anyway as they face the defending Super Bowl Champion, Kansas City Chiefs.
