As we count down the days until the Chicago Bears arrive at training camp, we are also counting down the roster for the 2023 season. This list is looking into which players will have the biggest impact on wins and losses and which players may have the best shot to make the active roster.

Today, we are still counting down towards the top 53. We are at number 72, with quarterback Nathan Peterman.

Chicago Bears 2023 roster ranking: No. 72 Nathan Peterman

Last season roster ranking: No. 60

We all know the story of Nathan Peterman. The former fifth-round pick had a few rough starts as a rookie and bounced from the Buffalo Bills to the Las Vegas Raiders, and now he has settled with the Chicago Bears.

Peterman is in an interesting spot where he may make the 53-man roster; if not, he is a lock for the practice squad. Still, he is number 72 because when it comes to which players impact games the most, it will not be Peterman.

If Justin Fields gets hurt, the Bears will probably sign a new quarterback. It will not be Peterman stepping into any spot. However, he has value, and the team likes him.

As we have noted, there is a notable connection between offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, quarterback coach Andrew Janocko, and quarterback Nathan Peterman. They all played for Pitt at one point in college, and Getsy is from the area. It is clear that he views Peterman as a helpful person in the meeting rooms and in the building throughout the week.

He also comes with loyalty to the point where they could cut him and expect him to sign back on the Chicago Bears practice squad. That is because of the possible lack of interest, but also the safety he knows that he can stick on the PS all season.

The Chicago Bears could have easily moved on but did not. Still, we had him at 60 last year because the backup was Trevor Siemian, and there was no number three. PJ Walker is number two, and they signed Tyson Bagent to compete with Peterman. He will stick around, but he drops in our rankings.
