Identifying roster locks on the Chicago Bears 53-man roster
We are now under a week until the Chicago Bears have to make roster cuts to get their team from 90 players down to 53. While there will be a few questions on the back end of the roster, most of the spots are locked in. How many locks are on the Bears right now, and how many spots will be earned in the next week?
Quarterback - (2): Caleb Williams, Tyson Bagent
The only bubble player here is Brett Rypien, but he could circle back to the practice squad. Because quarterbacks can get called up from the practice squad an unlimited amount of times to be the emergency quarterback, he is more likely to get cut than stay.
Running back (5): DeAndre Swift, Khalil Herbet, Roschon Johnson, Travis Homer, Khari Blasingame
The only question here is whether one of Ian Wheeler or Velus Jones makes it. It could end up being neither. Homer was close to the bubble, but this preseason, as well as his track record on special teams should lock him down.
Wide Receiver (4): D.J. Moore, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, Tyler Scott
Tyler Scott is not getting cut, but we have no clue who will be behind him on the depth chart. All of Collin Johnson, DeAndre Carter, Dante Pettis, and Nsimba Webster have a case for the fifth wide receiver job, but none have done enough to lock it down.
Tight End (3): Cole Kmet, Gerald Everett, Marcedes Lewis
It is hard to even say that a fourth tight end is on the bubble. Both Stephen Carlson and Tommy Sweeny have made a strong case for the practice squad, but both are low on the bubble.
Offensive Line (8): Braxton Jones, Teven Jenkins, Coleman Shelton, Nate Davis, Darnell Wright, Matt Pryor, Ryan Bates, Kiran Amegadjie
Now that the Bears activated their third round rookie there are eight locks for the roster. The Bears could keep nine or ten lineman so Larry Borom, Jake Curhan, Ja’Tyre Carter, and Bill Murray are likely the four final bubble players competing for one or two spots.
Defensive Line (6): Montez Sweat, Gervon Dexter, Andrew Billings, DeMarcus Walker, Austin Booker, Zacch Pickens
Byron Cowart is very close to a lock at defensive tackle, but the Bears could go outside the roster to replace him, so we cannot lock him down yet. Jacob Martin has been injured, Dominique Robinson has struggled and Daniel Hardy is a rookie UDFA, but one or two of those three have a strong shot to make the roster as well.
Linebacker (4): TJ Edwards, Tremaine Edmunds, Jack Sanborn, Amen Ogbongbemiga
The only questions here are Micah Baskerville and Noah Sewell. One or both could make the roster, but it is hard to say either is a lock at this point.
Cornerback (5): Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon. Tyrique Stevenson, Terell Smith, Josh Blackwell
Blackwell locked down the backup slot job last week. The only questions are Greg Stroman and Jaylon Jones. Both made the roster last year, but can the Bears keep seven cornerbacks this year?
Safety (4): Kevin Byard, Jaquan Brisker, Jonathan Owens, Elijah Hicks
Quindell Johnson and Adrian Colbert have outside shots as the fifth safety, but they are far from locks.
Special Teams (3): Cairo Santos, Tory Taylor, Patrick Scales
