Recent Chicago Bears draft dud expected to make 53-man roster
The Chicago Bears have until Tuesday afternoon to finalize their 53-man roster for the start of the regular season but the team used this past weekend to start making cuts.
In addition to the cuts that were made, the Bears also addressed needs along the defensive line with two separate trades. Defensive end Darrell Taylor and defensive tackle Chris Williams were acquired, and the expectation is that Taylor will see regular time as the opposite end to Montez Sweat while Williams will serve as a depth piece along the middle of the defensive line.
The additions of Williams and Taylor to the 53-man roster do provide some clarity for the plan for the Bears' defensive line. In addition to that, while speaking after practice on Sunday, Matt Eberflus all but confirmed another bubble player on the defensive line will be on the roster.
“I think it’ll be rotational and then we’ll play the hot hand,” Eberflus said. “Like I said, I feel really good about all the guys who are out there right now: [Austin] Booker, Dom [Robinson] and [DeMarcus Walker] and all those guys that are playing with Tez on the one side. We’ll just see, make it a competition, see who’s hot and let ’em rush.”
Given the impressive preseason from Daniel Hardy, there was a growing belief that Robinson could find himself off the Bears' 53-man roster. Instead, it seems that the Bears counting on Robinson as being part of the pass-rush rotation during the season.
To Robinson's credit, he hasn't had a bad preseason but rather, he was outplayed by Hardy. Since being selected by the Bears in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Robinson has a total of 2 sacks in 28 games played.
While Robinson seemingly has made the 53-man roster based on Eberflus' latest comments, he still may have an uphill climb in terms of playing time. If Robinson fails to impress within the rotation, this will undoubtedly be his last in a Bears' uniform.
