Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams reminded everyone on Saturday why he was the unquestioned first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Williams made his Soldier Field debut on Saturday as the Bears hosted the Cincinnati Bengals for their third preseason game of the year. In his closing series, Williams dazzled the fans in attendance with a highlight-reel throw to fellow rookie, Rome Oduze and capped the drive off with a magical touchdown scramble.
In the weeks leading up to the draft, and throughout his two collegiate seasons at USC, Williams has drawn comparisons to Patrick Mahomes due to his ability to make plays off-script. Williams has not shied away from those comparisons and with plays like the ones he made on Saturday, they will only grow stronger.
So strong that one of Mahomes' favorite wide receivers in his early seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, Tyreek Hill, stopped just short of namedropping the perennial MVP candidate when talking about Williams' performance on Saturday.
This is an unusual feeling for Bears fans as we have grown used to the laundry list of quarterbacks who never answered the bell of being the franchise quarterback for an organization that has never had one. Now, even if it is the preseason, Williams is the talk of the NFL.
One thing is clear, if Williams is going to make plays like the ones he put together on Saturday against the Bengals, games will be appointment viewing this season.
Saturday was a reminder of just how special Williams can be at the quarterback position and it's a feeling that Bears fans will need to get used to for many seasons ahead.
