Why it is Time for the Chicago Bears to Move on from Matt Eberflus

The Chicago Bears currently hold the number one overall pick for the 2024 NFL draft. In addition to that, they were only one game behind the final NFC playoff spot right in the thick of the playoff race. Until they did what they have done in two other games this season: blow a double-digit fourth-quarter lead.

The Chicago Bears should move on from Matt Eberflus

The Bears were in control against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday afternoon. The Bears closed the 3rd quarter leading the Browns 17-7, but Joe Flacco's three interceptions were not enough for Matt Eberflus' squad to seal the deal. Flacco and the Browns were able to rally in the 4th quarter, sealing the game-winning field goal with 36 seconds left to play, bringing the Bears down to 5-9 on the season. This could have been avoided if it were not for two questionable offensive calls during the game.

Rather than attempting a 54-yard field goal to try and go up 10-7 at the half, Matt Eberflus decided to try a hail mary instead, which fell flat. Kicker Cairo Santos is 26/28 on field goal attempts on the year and 6/6 from 50+ yards by the way. Similarly, in the 3rd quarter, on 4th and one from the Browns 33-yard line, the Bears decided to go for it rather than kick a 50-yard field goal by Santos.

Just one week after stumping the red-hot Detroit Lions, the Bears coaching staff could not keep their lead and make more manageable calls on offense that could have extended their lead.

In Matt Eberlus’ debut season in 2022, he gave Chicago their longest losing streak in a single season in franchise history, with a defense that was dead last in sacks which led to an abysmal 3-14 record, their worst since 2016. And so far in 2023, Eberflus has allowed three fourth-quarter double-digit leads that have ended in losses in a season where quarterback Justin Fields is having his best season in his young NFL career.

This roster is talented, experienced, and built to win now. Chicago will not be able to exceed any sort of expectations with Fields under center with their current coaching staff. It may be time for a coaching change in the Windy City.
