What the Bears’ latest free agent quarterback workout means for Caleb Williams
By Ryan Heckman
After a Week 3 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the narratives started to fly in regards to Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams.
Williams broke a rookie record by throwing for 363 yards in the loss, but his critics were out in full force after seeing him make some questionable decisions in the game. On the other hand, Williams also made some phenomenal throws and was the sole reason that offense had any chance in the game against Indy.
It's clear Williams is going to have his growing pains as a rookie, and what's even more clear is the fact that narratives will continue to be written based on our hot take type of society. Take Jayden Daniels' recent Monday Night Football performance into context, and it's easy to see where all of Williams' critics were headed after watching the LSU star make rookie history of his own.
One thing is abundantly clear, above all else: the Bears have issues, and they don't stem from Williams' play.
So, for anyone of the party attempting to try and shout they were "right" about Williams after just three games, I've got news for you: you're wrong, and you will continue to be wrong.
Now, as for what the Bears plan to do this week, hopefully it includes offensive coordinator Shane Waldron making a few play calling changes. One thing this week won't entail, though, is any semblance of a quarterback change.
More Bears news:
On a typical off-day for the Bears, the organization works out veteran free agents. Tuesday morning, the Bears brought in former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and 2-time Super Bowl champion, Chris Oladokun.
Oladokun, 27, spent the last two years with the Chiefs and was awarded with a championship ring each season as merely a practice squad member. But, he's a champion nonetheless.
No, the Bears aren't making any changes at quarterback
For anyone who saw this news and might have thought it had anything to do with the Bears' current quarterback room, this workout means absolutely nothing.
It means nothing for Caleb Williams, and even to those who speculate whether it has anything to do with backup Tyson Bagent, that's likely not a conclusion to draw here, either.
There are quarterback-needy teams around the league right now, with injuries happening left and right. Namely, the Miami Dolphins are in desperate need of some help with Tua Tagovailoa out for a few games and backup Skylar Thompson getting banged up.
Sure, Bagent would be a massive upgrade in Miami. But, the likelihood of the Bears trading Bagent and signing someone like Oladokun is extremely small. Rather, general manager Ryan Poles always takes the time to work out free agents and get a feel for what the current pool has to offer, just in case of emergency.
For now, the Bears are set at the quarterback position. Carry on, folks.
