Why latest injury update on Rome Odunze, Keenan Allen is reason to worry

It's not the end of the world, but it's not great either.

Wednesday, Chicago Bears head coach. Matt Eberflus met with the media briefly before practice.

He knew, right out of the gate, the questions that would be on everyone's mind. So, without even opening it up for questions, Eberflus tackled the notable issues right away.

Eberflus said he knew he'd get asked about receivers Rome Odunze and Keenan Allen, so he offered a status update from the jump.

"We're in a good spot. It's nothing serious," Eberflus said of Odunze's injury.

Odunze was already diagnosed with an MCL sprain earlier in the week, thankfully avoiding any serious damage.

As for Allen, Eberflus said the veteran will also not practice Wednesday as he deals with a nagging heel injury. It should be noted, though, that Allen had this injury prior to Week 1 against the Titans and he did end up playing. However, did playing in Week 1 worsen the injury for Allen?

The Bears head coach didn't seem too worried about either receiver and noted they were allowing Allen to "rest up" Wednesday, insinuating that he could be fine by Sunday night.

While Eberflus seemed relatively positive in regards to the injured wide receivers, it still must be noted that game day is just four days away and this offense looked horrendous against the Titans. The Bears are essentially playing with house money against Houston on Sunday night, which is a positive. But, fans don't want to see another abysmal offensive showing.

And, in order for the Bears to have a higher likelihood of success on offense in Week 2, they'll need Odunze and Allen to be on that field.

Let's say we get past Thursday's practice and either one of them aren't practicing in full. That leaves just one day of practice before the game, and the odds of success are not in a player's favor if they either miss Friday's practice or are even limited.

Williams, being a rookie quarterback, needs reps with his top guys. There is no other way to say it. The struggles we saw in Week 1 can be attributed, in part, to the offensive line. But, Williams also looked like a rookie. Both can be true. Continuity and consistency is going to be key for Williams and his playmakers.

The Bears offense needs Rome Odunze and Keenan Allen in Week 2, but shouldn't force the issue

Although there is reason to worry about two of the top three wideouts on this Bears team, logic would tell us that Chicago cannot force the issue with either one.

It is, indeed, a long season. This is only Week 2. At this point, if Odunze and Allen need to rest up and sit out a week in order to be healthy for the long-term, then so be it. That's what will need to happen.

Again, the Bears are playing with house money Sunday night. If they lose to Houston, no big deal. The Texans are a great team and the Bears aren't being picked by many to come out victorious. So, if they lose, and that loss happens to see Odunze and Allen sitting on the sideline, then it's on to Week 3 and no sweat off anyone's back.

If the Bears win, then of course there's a whole lot of reason for optimism.

Either way, playing it safe with both of these receivers should be the way to go, especially with it being so early on in the season. Does it negatively impact Williams and the offense to not have them out there? Absolutely.

But, is it in the best interest of the team for the two of them to wait until they're 100 percent? Absolutely.
