Ryan Poles receives vote of confidence following Matt Eberflus firing
Following news breaking that Matt Eberflus had been fired as the Chicago Bears' head coach, the organization issued a press release that contained statements from general manager Ryan Poles and team president Kevin Warren.
First and foremost, it seems that Poles is safe as the Bears' general manager. Questions over Poles' job status has surfaced in recent weeks given the dysfunction that has occurred during the Bears' current six-game losing streak but the statement from Warren does suggest that there isn't a change coming with the team's general manager.
When Eberflus met with reporters on Friday morning, the immediate takeaway was that George McCaskey was still holding the strings within the Bears' organization. The fact that the Bears fired Eberflus in-season is a sign that Poles was serious this past offseason when he indicated he was chartering a new direction for the organization.
Of course, the firing of Eberflus likely wasn't the confirmation he was seeking of that fact. Nevertheless, for the first time since taking over as the Bears' general manager, Poles will be leading a head coaching search.
When Poles was fired, it's believed he was given a list of finalists to be the next head coach of the Bears that included Eberflus, Dan Quinn and Jim Caldwell. With Poles in place as the team's head coach and Warren above him, the Bears will not be using an outside consultant for this next head coaching hire.
While Poles likely is safe, for now, as the Bears' general manager, this is a hire that he can't get wrong. With the Bears having an answer at the quarterback position in Caleb Williams, Poles will not only need to find the head coach that is the right fit for Williams but one who establishes a culture of playoff contention.
