Last season was a train wreck for the Chicago Bears' offense underneath former offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. It didn't take long for players to start voicing their displeasure with the lack of coaching they were receiving from Waldron, and the proof showed up every week on the scoreboard.
Once it was abundantly clear the Bears offense was going nowhere under Waldron, he was ultimately fired and Thomas Brown took over. Waldron was clearly not suited to be an offensive coordinator at this stage, let alone have any hand in an NFL offense.
At least, that's what the evidence in Chicago led us to believe.
Now a few weeks into the offseason for most NFL teams, Waldron has a new home. The Jacksonville Jaguars have reportedly hired him to come in and be their pass game coordinator.
This whole offseason is sort of comical on Jacksonville's behalf, and the Bears have played a part in it.
The Bears and Jaguars have had very different offseasons, and Shane Waldron landing in Jacksonville is right on par
First, the Jaguars badly wanted to hire Ben Johnson to be their next head coach. Because Johnson preferred Chicago, of course, the Jags lost out on that opportunity.
Following the Johnson hiring in Chicago, Jacksonville then found themselves in what ended up being a hilarious and confusing saga with Liam Coen before he ultimately became their head coach. With Coen initially looking like he was agreeing to a new contract to stay in Tampa Bay, he spurned the Buccaneers last-minute and went to Jacksonville.
More Bears news:
So, the Bears got the coach Jacksonville wanted while the Jaguars got a head coach who may not be able to be trusted.
The other funny layer to all of this is the fact that the Bears and Jaguars swapped Waldron and Press Taylor. After serving as the Jaguars' offensive coordinator for three seasons, he was let go and found a role with the Bears as their new pass game coordinator.
The two teams swapped former offensive coordinators and hired them in lesser roles, but it still has to be funny for Bears fans. Chicago is in a much better position with a head coach that's proven he can get results and was visibly assertive in his demeanor and in what his expectations are for his new team.
Meanwhile, no one can stop talking about Coen's quirkiness and the route he ultimately took to become Jacksonville's head coach. Both teams are in much different positions.
While Jaguars fans can try to talk themselves into the idea that things will be different going forward, Bears fans can almost assure themselves things will get better in Chicago.
