Chicago Bears fire Shane Waldron in desperate move by Matt Eberflus
One week after Matt Eberflus' former offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears, Luke Getsy, was fired by the Las Vegas Raiders, Eberflus has followed suit and fired his handpicked successor to Getsy, Shane Waldron.
After the Bears' offense failed to score a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals last week, Eberflus dodged questions about the job security of Waldron. In addition to never firing a head coach in-season, the Bears have also shied away from firing coordinators in-season due to reasons on the field. Last season, the Bears dismissed two coordinators due to HR-related reasons.
Following the offense's no touchdown effort against the Cardinals, they followed suit with an effort against the New England Patriots on Sunday that was worse. Not only did the Bears' offense fail to score a touchdown against the Patriots, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked nine time.
During an interview with ESPN 1000 on Monday morning that ended with Eberflus being trolled by David Kaplan, the Bears' head coach did let it slip that the Bears were mapping out changes to their offensive coaching staff.
This is a new low for the Bears' organization. The situation was right there for the Bears to take last January to not only fire Eberflus but also find an offensive-minded head coach to pair with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. It would have broken the flawed cycle that the Bears had with Mitchell Trubisky and Justin Fields.
Instead, Ryan Poles was proud to bring back Eberflus, who reminded everyone how bad he is at hiring coordinators with his selection of Waldron. Sure, some will view Eberflus firing Waldron now as a symbol of him trying to save his job but the head coach being fired at the end of the season should be viewed as a formality at this point.
Replacing Waldron as the Bears' offensive coordinator will Thomas Brown. Brown now becomes the third offensive coordinator under Matt Eberflus.
