Super Bowl 59 was a blowout as the Philadelphia Eagles avenged their previous loss in the Super Bowl against the same Kansas City Chiefs Sunday night with a convincing 40-22 victory. Former Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio put on a clinic masterclass last night as their defensive coordinator, with his defense embarrassed Patrick Mahomes all night without even blitzing.
Super Bowl 59 was also a masterclass put on by their general manager Howie Roseman. It is amazing the number of veteran stars the Eagles have lost on both sides of the trenches in the last few years, and yet Roseman is one step ahead.
DJ's guy Howie Roseman is so committed & successful at building through the trenches in the draft that the 2024 Eagles lost a HOF OC (Kelce), 6x Pro Bowl DT (Cox) and their sack leader from 2022 & 2023 (Reddick) in one offseason & still bullied the 2x defending champs to win a SB https://t.co/4yAyJmjBGU

They also lost interior defensive lineman Javon Hargrave, who left to sign with San Francisco, but is expected to be released when the league new year begins. But the Eagles never missed a beat as they had Milton Williams drafted in 2021 and was ready to take over Hargrove's position. They also replaced Flecther Cox with Jalen Carter, and Cam Jurgens took over at center this past season following Jason Kelce's retirement.
Super Bowl 59 result reinforces the need for the Bears to invest in trenches this off-season.
General Manager Ryan Poles survived a rough 2024 season where many questioned his job security largely due to his negligence of the offensive line. Last night's Super Bowl reinforces the need for the Bears to invest heavily into trenches this off-season.
Eagles edge rusher Josh Sweat and defensive tackle Milton Williams both had an incredible game just in time for their free agency. Sweat led the game with 2.5 sacks while Williams had 2 sacks and 4 tackles. Both players offer an immediate upgrade on their defensive line. The Bears should sign one of them since they have needs at both positions.
But the free agent many are linking the Bears to is Kansas City guard Trey Smith. Poles was with Kansa City when Smith was drafted, and right tackle Darnell Wright played with him at the University of Tennessee from 2019-2020. They have an advantage over other clubs that they must use as his bidding is expected to be above $20 million per year.
As a former executive with the Chiefs, he witnessed the 31-9 loss to Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl. They upgraded the offensive line that off-season with the signing of Joe Thuney and drafting Creed Humphrey that off-season.
Many fans will link them to trade rumors involving Myles Garrett and Micah Parsons this off-season. But they need to be realistic. Poles need to avoid any temptations to give up draft capital for either player and instead draft and develop their own version of Garrett or Parsons. The beatdown Philadelphia put on the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX needs to be a wake-up call for Poles about investing in the trenches this off-season.
