As the Chicago Bears wrap up OTAs and head into training camp, several key position battles are already taking shape. These competitions will play out over the course of the summer and could have a real impact on the roster heading into Week 1.

What position battles should Chicago Bears fans watch?

Left Tackle

The most notable competition is at left tackle. Second-round rookie Ozzy Trapilo is going to have a chance to start, but he’ll have to earn it. Trapilo will need to beat out Braxton Jones, who did not participate in OTA sessions. However, second-year tackle Kiran Amegadjie also remains in the mix and is not being ruled out based on his spring performance.

A three-man battle at one of the league’s most important positions will be a major storyline to follow throughout camp.

Backup Quarterback

Speaking of important positions, the Bears will also have a quarterback battle this summer. While the backup role may not carry the same weight as the starter, it’s still critical as every team tends to lose their starter for at least a game or two each season.

Last year, Tyson Bagent held the job, but with a new coaching staff comes veteran Case Keenum, who brings experience and stability. The question now is whether Keenum steps in and wins the role outright or serves as more of a mentor in a third-string spot.

SAM Linebacker

While the Bears primarily play in nickel and sub-package defenses, when they shift to their base formation with three linebackers, there’s a clear competition for the SAM role. Noah Sewell was expected to take over the spot, but the team spent a pick on Ruben Hyppolite in the draft, which is a sign they believe he can challenge for real snaps.

Though the role is limited, it still carries meaningful playing time on defense, and this battle will be worth monitoring.
