On Wednesday, the Chicago Bears extended quarterback Tyson Bagent to a two-year deal worth $10 million, with a max value of $16 million with incentives. The extension cemented his spot as Chicago’s primary backup quarterback, and while Bagent is happy about that, this deal represents much more to him.

Speaking with the media on Wednesday, the quarterback had an emotional moment as he explained what this extension means for his family. Talking through tears, Bagent revealed that his father, who he says is his right-hand man, didn’t have running water until he got to high school. Admitting that he doesn’t know many people with money back home, he says this contract takes weight off his family’s shoulders, and there are certainly a lot of people he can help.

Bagent also revealed that his family is growing, announcing that he has a baby on the way. With his child in mind, the 25-year-old isn’t planning to make any luxury purchases; instead, he's saving up for his family. He also admitted he never thought he would make this much money.

Entering the NFL after five seasons at Division II Shepherd University, Bagent joined the Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He made the 53-man roster as a rookie and was Chicago’s third-string quarterback. Now, ahead of his third NFL season, Bagent has survived a coaching change and is the unquestioned QB2 for the Bears.

He appeared in nine games over his first two seasons, starting four as a rookie, going 2-2. In all of his regular-season action, he has completed 66.2% of his passes for 870 yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions, while also rushing for 102 yards. Bagent is now playing his best football in the preseason, as he prepares for another year as QB2. This time, he’ll have much more money to his name.
