It's not often a backup quarterback could create headlines and this might not blow up as much, but it certainly raised some eyebrows.

Chicago Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagent spoke with the media after practice in training camp, discussing the intensity and attention to detail that come with it all. While it was more meant to be a compliment to what the new head coach Ben Johnson is doing at camp, it could be taken as a shot at his old head coach Matt Eberflus.

"It’s nothing like I’ve ever experienced in the league so far. A pleasant surprise."

Bagent is just saying what Bears fans have thought of the past three years

Eberflus has indeed been taking his licks in the offseason after the Bears fired him following the disastrous Thanksgiving game against the Detroit Lions. He's been accused of not watching film with quarterback Caleb Williams, along with the rest of the coaching staff, which he has denied.

The last three years have been rough on Bears fans with Eberflus as the head coach, with zero playoff appearances and no winning seasons. He finished his time with a 14-32 overall record.

Bagent understands the Eberflus era well, having served as the backup quarterback in 2023 and 2024. Under the circumstances of Eberflus being his head coach, the former undrafted rookie completed 66.2% of his passes for 870 yards and three touchdowns, with six interceptions, in nine games.

Bears fans are happy to have moved on from Eberflus and have Johnson leading the way after a successful run as offensive coordinator with the Lions. Johnson knows what a winning culture looks like and has learned a lot from Dan Campbell on how to execute it.

Training camp has just been a reminder of how the Bears dodged a bullet with another year with Eberflus. The losing ways of the old Bears appear to be out the door.
