Veteran edge rusher seems to be perfectly aligned as potential fit for the Bears

If the Bears end up looking to add an edge rusher, this guy might actually be the perfect fit.

When asked specifically about the prospect of bringing in a veteran edge rusher he has a history with Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen solidified the team's current "let's see what we have" stance.

"I think we feel pretty good about where we’re at and what we have and yet, you never know what opportunities might present themselves down the road."

Allen was, of course, talking about Cameron Jordan, whom he coached for years with the New Orleans Saints. But that "you never know what opportunities might present themselves" sentiment is easily transferable to any free agent edge rusher who is still available, or may still be available as training camp nears.

With scheme familiarity, Jordan would be the most seamless fit should the Bears consider adding an edge rusher. But, depending on his other options, that tie to Allen might not be enough to bring him to Chicago.

Bears have again been matched with veteran edge rusher who might be perfect fit

ESPN's Matt Bowen has matched 14 available free agents with teams. He matched the Bears with an edge rusher, of course, but Von Miller, not Jordan.

"The Bears are awaiting the return of edge rushers Dayo Odeyingbo (Achilles) and Shemar Turner (torn ACL), and the team didn't take an edge rusher in the draft. That could open the door for Miller as a sub-package defender for Chicago."

"At this stage of his career, Miller is best used as a true designated pass rusher. He had a team-high nine sacks for the Commanders last season."

Bowen is not the first one to match the Bears with Miller. During an appearance on 104.3 The Score earlier this month, NFL analyst Brian Baldinger did so as well.

"I would say, Von Miller led the Commanders in sacks last year with nine", Baldinger said. "I'm around Von a lot...we do some things together, I go to "Sack Summit" every year...I'm sure Von's just sitting back, I'm sure his phone is ringing. He's a guy I would be very interested in. He's healthy, he's been healthy, had a good season last year. Played 30 to 35 percent of the snaps, got nine sacks."

The 37-year-old Miller has remained effective as a situational pass rusher, with 15 sacks and 76 pressures over the last two seasons, and he would not take many snaps away from someone like Austin Booker. If he's waiting to sign with a new team (he didn't sign with Washington until July 17 last year), the Bears' current approach to their edge rusher situation matches well with that.

Cost, role and, most importantly, timeline to sign has a chance to equal Miller becoming a Chicago Bear in about two months.
