With inaction on Matt Eberflus, Ryan Poles deserves to be on the hot seat
As scheduled, Chicago Bears' head coach Matt Eberflus met with reporters on Friday morning to discuss the team's loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving.
It was that resulted in Eberflus being mocked across the country. Given how Eberflus froze during the final 30 seconds of the Bears' loss on Thursday, there was no justification that could have been made by the team in terms of bringing the over-promoted defensive coordinator who is operating on borrowed time.
But, this is a Bears' organization that has never fired a head coach in-season. So while the overwhelming expectation was that Eberflus would be fired by this time today, it's no surprise that he is allowed to continue to serve in his role.
Talking about Eberflus moving forward is a moot point. While the Bears are taking the cowardice approach in allowing him to coach the remainder of the season before firing him on Black Monday after the season, at least, he will not be the team's head coach in 2025. That we know.
But with Ryan Poles failing to make the difficult but right decision on Friday in terms of firing Eberflus now, the Bears' general manager should immediately be placed on the hot seat.
One of the major talking points last offseason was how Poles and Kevin Warren met with Caleb Williams and his representation during the Pre-Draft process. Among the most significant talking points from that meeting was Poles assuring Williams that the organization's past failures would not continue under his watch. That was a lie. Poles is the mastermind behind the disaster and dysfunction that has failed the Bears' 2024 season.
With Friday's inaction, the case can now be made for Poles, along with Eberflus, to be fired at the end of the season. Poles has had his moments as the Bears' general manager, and there is something to be said for the turnaround he has constructed with the team's roster, but his loyalty to Eberflus has set the organization back another season.
