Bear Down

I struggled between two options here for the most common thing you might hear a Chicago Bears fan say. I decided from a true Bears fan perspective, this has to be the most common one. If you have ever gone to a game at Soldier Field, you will understand what I mean.

Hell, if you follow any of the communities on social media dedicated to the Chicago Bears, you will see this saying over and over again. It has become a sort of sign-off and a way to say, I appreciate your fandom and our team, even when things are bad. The saying Bear Down is a way to hype everyone up and has become a true staple of the franchise.

This is great, but where did this saying originate? Well, the saying comes straight out of the Chicago Bears fight song. This song is played after every touchdown or field goal at home games. Throughout the song, Bear Down is sang four times. In fact, it starts the song and ends the song.

The song was introduced in 1941 and composed by Jerry Downs. Downs is actually a pseudonym for Al Hoffman. Hoffman has written many songs including Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo and others from the Disney classic Cinderella.

The strange thing about this whole thing is how beloved this song is, yet Hoffman does no seem to have any apparent ties to Chicago. If you are a Bears fan and do not know the words to this song by heart, I suggest you start memorizing it. In fact, it has become a staple at bedtime when singing my five and seven-year-olds to sleep.
