Chicago Bears: An early look at offensive 2020 draft needs
Offensive Guard
We know that the Bears have had their struggles at guard for a few seasons now and need to be in a position to fix it. They have Rashaad Coward, Cody Whitehair (when he’s not playing center), James Daniels and Kyle Long, among others at the position.
The history of this position is one of pain and inefficiency. Long is often injured and could be a cap casualty. Coward is still learning. Whitehair may be more valuable at center while Daniels has struggled in his second season with the Bears.
Chicago needs to take a look at the draft to try to improve this position or at least get some better depth. With the Coward experiment taking a while to “take hold” and the jury still out on Daniels, I think that the Bears need to try to find some help here in order to make the line better and get better pass protection and run support out of their front.
Another thing that the Bears could do is look to move Whitehair back to center and keep Daniels and Coward at the guard positions, then look for someone to compete with Coward, or perhaps Daniels too.
When it comes to Long, it would appear as if he is going to be gone. He just can’t stay on the field and is taking up cap space as well as a roster spot. I think he is going to be let go this offseason.
If anything, the Bears need depth at the guard position and should be able to get it through the draft. There are some interesting prospects out there that the Bears could have some interest in. We will cover those prospects in future articles.
