Two weeks into the 2020 season, and the Chicago Bears have an issue with Danny Trevathan
After a poor performance in his week one game, Danny Trevathan saw his playing time reduced in week two. Trevathan still saw his early down role, but on passing downs, Deon Bush took over a s hybrid linebacker/safety.
The plan worked as Bush finished with a pick and the Bears won. However, upon further review, the question is not whether or not this will continue, but whether Bush will see an even more increased role in the coming weeks.
As noted, Trevathan was not on the field nearly as long. However, we were still able to find a slip up that resulted in a big play.
Check the play below. Following Dion Lewis out of the backfield, he is reading the blockers to his left and is flowing to the sideline with them. However Dion Lewis cuts his route inside, where Trevathan is far behind.
Trevathan is slow to recover and after Lewis makes the catch, he is no longer the closest man to the football.
In Week One, we saw a lack of speed and burst against the pass. However, even more concerning was mental mistakes against the run. This play encapsulated all of the issues with Trevathan to date.
Mentally, he over pursued, something that used to never be applied to Trevathan. Physically, he was losing ground fast to Dion Lewis, who is not quite young and spry himself.
It is only two weeks, but the Chicago Bears have a problem. They gave Kyle Long four weeks to figure out his issues before sending him away from the team. It is not this bad yet, but Trevathan is a concern through two weeks.
