Chicago Bears’ biggest questions heading into 2021
By Joseph Herff
How will the Chicago Bears’ defense look under Sean Desai?
With Chuck Pagano announcing his retirement, the Bears searched for a new defensive coordinator. The Bears eventually gave the position to long-time assistant Sean Desai, who was highly-coveted by former Bears’ defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
Desai though hasn’t only been under Fangio. He’s been with the Bears learning under Mel Tucker, Fangio, and Pagano. But, from the sounds of his recent press conference, he is all about running the Fangio style of defense predicated on 3-4 with two-high safeties. He prefers to have coverage over pressure, so he won’t be blitzing much, but they will be prioritizing correct coverage and not the soft coverage Pagano ran.
Desai can get the most out of players like Johson, Fuller, and Jackson this way. These guys are elite level players that will look their best in this scheme, or at least they should. However, that is all speculation. How will everyone really look is going to be the real question? Can they get the most out of Robert Quinn? We won’t be able to find this out unfortunately until the season gets going.
